A thousand nights ago in the United States of America in his inaugural speech, John. F. Kennedy said, we shouldn’t ask what our country can do for us but what we can do for our country.
About 30 years ago, at a small gathering, ‘The League of Extra Ordinary Silver Knights’ put thoughts together and formed the Silver Knights Club with the sole focus then being the social welfare of their wives, children and professional careers.
The motivating factor then was to find ways of mitigating – for their families – the seemingly dull social atmosphere in Ibadan at that time.
Over time, The Silver Knights Club has metamorphosed into a socio-philanthropic organization with annual donations to motherless babies home, the Cheshire home and scholarships to students of schools for the physically challenged.
Silver Knights, Ibadan and their Damsels held their inaugural Black Tie gala on Sunday 25th March 2018 at the Banquet Hall of the prestigious Premier Hotel, Ibadan.
At the occasion which had Emeritus Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe, CON as chairman, the creme de la creme of the region was fully represented. These included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi who was represented by Oba Muraina Adebanjo Adedini, Asoya of Ile Isoya, Ife Kingdom as well as the highly respected octogenarian, Chief Folake Solanke, SAN. Other eminent guests included former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof Ayo Banjo, Africa’s first Professor of Linguistics, Ayo Bamgbose, former governor of Western State, Gen. Oluwole Rotimi, former Minister of Police Affairs, Alh. Jelili Adesiyannn as well as former goalkeeper of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Ike Shorounmu. Other eminent guests included top officials of international development agencies, captains of industry-leading academics and professionals.
Seun David Onigbinde, the CEO of BudgIT gave the keynote address and spoke glowingly about what the SK stood for as well as what his company was doing to track the budgetary performances of Nigerian governments and their expenditure patterns in order to curb their excesses.
The event was organized to share the vision of the Silver Knights Humantarian Foundation and to seek the support of individual and institutional partners for its avowed mission. Registered recently as a non governmental organisation, the main objective of the SKHF is to provide humanitarian services to the less privileged in the areas of charitable services, portable water supply, sanitation and other forms of support to vulnerable groups like widows and orphans starting with its immediate communities.
Guests and speakers extolled the laudable initiative of the Silver Knights and promised to collaborate and support SKHF in achieving its noble objectives,
The Silver Knights, Ibadan is a family club of distinguished Nigerian professionals, academics and entrepreneurs resident in Ibadan. As part of its growth programme, the club recently established the Silver Knights Humanitarian Fund (SKHF) as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to raise funds and implement remedial interventions in vulnerable and needy communities across our nation.
The Gala event was in part held to unveil and share the SKHF vision with friends, guests and partners during this evening of cocktails, light entertainment and dinner.
